March 13th 2013

Tournament : Calabasas $15,000

Calabasas was a very difficult trip but one that was character building with a lot of positives to take away. My first two qualifying matches were very routine short straight set wins. I needed one more win to qualify and as I checked my draw I saw that I would play a 16 year old player.

16 is pretty young and although I have had trouble playing against younger players this year, 16 seemed almost too young to be overly concerned. Well it turned out being one of my toughest, most physical matches of the year as my opponent had a cannon of a serve and seemed to serve 90 percent first serves in the first set as I lost 7-6. The second set I dropped a huge lead, but I managed to win 7-6.

At this point my body is not feeling good; I definitely needed to hydrate more than I thought since my back was tight as a drum and cramps were coming on. I call a trainer at 1-0 in the third to loosen my back up. I don’t sit the rest of the match trying to stay loose to prevent my twinges from turning in to locked cramps, but I found a way to win 7-6 after 3 hours and 40 minutes. This was a match where I was so tired it was hard for me to eat dinner. I took an ice batch and woke up the next morning with extreme muscle tightness.

On to the main draw… I got a day off of singles and won my first round doubles match the next day, which was probably good to loosen the body up. I drank tons of fluids the night before my first round singles match to help prevent the cramping I had to go through in qualifying. I start off fast and win the first set 6-2 playing very aggressive and coming in a lot which I guess I only do when I’m sick of playing long matches.

The second set I lost 6-3 one break and there I was in a third set again. Luckily this time I wasn’t cramping. I got off to a great start 2-0 but didn’t serve a great game and was broken. I broke back up 3-1 serving with more game points and lost two points that I was in very strong position of winning to get broken. So I’m up 3-2 and 30-love on his serve things are looking good again. I play a little passive but get 3 break points and don’t convert any!!! I hold the next game easily. Up 4-3 30-love on his serve again with 2 more break points I can’t convert!! Tied at 4-4 down love-40 serving I hit 3 straight winners and had two game points and didn’t convert!!! He holds the final game and I lose 6-4 in the third.

Very rarely do I play matches where I remember all the opportunities I had. It’s very frustrating to lose matches like this, but I put myself in a position to win numerous times and sometimes you just get a little unlucky. As I walk off the court the trainer tells me I sure get my money’s worth since this match was logged in at around 3 hours and 15 minutes. Doubles was sadly scheduled the same day. It’s very hard to play doubles after a grueling singles match since all my body wants to do is nothing. We lost 6-1 7-5. Calabasas was quite the experience and I will try to carry over the positives to Costa Mesa qualifying on March 16th.

Results:

Singles:

1st Round of Qualies: (6) Dennis Nevolo defeated Wesley Bertsch 6-1 6-1
2nd Round of Qualies: (6) Dennis Nevolo defeated Hufu Wang 6-2 6-1
Qualifying Round: (6) Dennis Nevolo defeated (16) Ernesto Escobedo 6-7(5) 7-6(5) 7-6(2)
1st Round of Main Draw: Min Hyeok Cho defeated Dennis Nevolo 2-6 6-3 6-4

Doubles:

1st Round of MD: Dennis Nevolo & Kevin King defeated Joshua Milton & Andrew Whittington 6-4 6-4
2nd Round of MD: Saketh Myneni & Sanam Singh defeated Dennis Nevolo & Kevin King 6-1 7-5

The Men’s Graphic Tee

When you first look at the fabric of our new men’s graphic t-shirt, it might actually look sheer. But, just wear it out on the tennis court, in the gym, or around town, and you’ll see this shirt is anything but flimsy! The weight of our new graphic tee is 40 grams lighter than our on-court performance shirts, so they will come across as feeling lighter than air. Plus, each time you wash the fabric, it will get softer, and never lose its performance.

Athletic DNA takes pride in the technology built into our garments, which provides wicking, anti-odor and UV protectants to our athletes. We built our new fabrics for PERFORMANCE, with thinner, light-weight materials.

Men’s Polo Shirt

Another new fabric that we are introducing is the Pique Mesh, which will be used in the side paneling of the men’s polo shirt, as well as the bottom half of our women’s performance tank tops. In addition to the all the technology mentioned above (anti-odor, moisture management, UV protectants), our pique is a very soft fabric to touch.

The Women’s Shorts & Capris

Moving on to the women’s Capri Pants and Hot Shorts! We searched high and low for a thick enough fabric that would provide enough support as well as firm compression along with great recovery, so these garments won’t stretch over time. We are confident that our female audience will fall in love with our new ADNA Capri Pants.

Athletic DNA Track Jackets & Half Zips

Finally in the 2013 Spring line, our faithful followers will find new and upgraded fabrics in our track jackets, track pants and half-zips for both men and women. We tested these new items with a select group of athletes, and the response was overwhelmingly positive about the cozy feel of the new line!

We also had our manufacturers brush the inside of these fabrics before production to give it a softer feeling. We also added spandex to provide more stretch, making the clothing more forgiving and comfortable.

On the half-zip we added a zipper garage, so customers don’t have to worry about catching their chin on the top of the zipper … you’re welcome for that one!

Overall, we truly believe that this is our strongest line release to date, not only because our designs are new and fresh, but our updated fabrics have been worn, tested and approved by each of our fit models and athletes who try them on!

Hidden Jems can be Found all over the New Athletic DNA Designs

One detail that we want blast to our fans are the custom prints and logos that we included (or added) to each of our styles. Part of our goal for the 2013 line, was to have some hidden surprises. We have custom prints on the inner lining of waistbands, pockets, and inside our hoody that our athletes may not notice at first glance … or even sixth. In addition to the custom prints, we also made a conscious effort to add 3M Reflective Heat Transfers to the back of the many pieces that show our logo, just a small touch to help our name, logo and slogan shine while our athletes do the same.

We made strategic choices when designing this spring line in an effort to bring our athletes the high-quality fabrics that they need and deserve. As a brand that truly cares about our athletes and followers, we always want to make sure that we establish the high quality products that you can expect to receive with every Athletic DNA purchase … regardless of whether you are ranked #1 or #1 million.

Wanted to touch base from Ben and I’s recent travels. If you missed our introduction to ADNA, you can check it out HERE.

We flew down to Texas two weeks ago for the Challenger of Dallas at T Bar M located in Dallas. I had been to a few Challengers before, but this is up there with the best of them. The set up was great for fans to enjoy a tennis match and for companies too, as Ben and I were camped out at a booth just feet from the action all week.

Challengers are something we really look forward to, because with ADNA being a young brand, we are looking for those up and coming pros that can grow with us. We have found no better place than the Challenger circuit where we get to see these guys working hard and playing at such a high level.

Much like you, we had heard a lot about our Athletic DNA pros, but Ben and I had not met most of them before. We got a lot of great stuff on Alex Bogomolov Jr., Tennys Sandgren, Daniel Kosakowski, Rajeev Ram, and as of our first day there the newest member of the team, Tim Smyczek.

So a large part of our week was getting to know those guys, getting pictures and video of them playing, and sitting down with them and getting some cool video we will be sharing on Facebook and Youtube over the coming weeks. Here is our highlight video from the Challenger.

Obviously the Dallas weather was great compared to the temps in Washington DC and Urbana, IL that Ben and I are used to in February. I would say the part I enjoyed was getting to see such high quality tennis while so close to the action. The biggest name there was James Blake and he drew some large crowds for his matches.

We wanted to congratulate Tennys Sandgren on reaching the doubles final. He didn’t have the singles result he wanted, but he continued to focus on doubles all week and the result showed. His doubles partner Rhyne Williams actually became only the 2nd person ever to reach the finals of both the singles and doubles at the Challenger of Dallas.

We also swung by the Texas Super Champ Major Zone tournament that was taking place in Dallas that same weekend. It is always cool to stop by a junior tournament and cheer on the kids wearing Athletic DNA.

Since Ben mentioned his first trip to In N Out last trip, my food highlight of this trip was going to Raising Cane’s. I don’t think I have been able to find better chicken fingers anywhere so check it and their sweet tea out if you see one.

Our next trip is to California later this week that will go through the BNP Paribas Open. This will also be Ben and I’s first time driving the RV, so if you’re in Arizona and California, keep an eye out!

Nine women, one bold proposal, and a $1 bill. That was all it took for women’s tennis to begin a 40-year journey of self-empowerment that has created a generation of sporting millionaires.

Back in 1971, the total prize money on offer for the first women’s tour was $309,000 spread over 19 tournaments.

In 2012, including the purse from the four grand slams, it cracked $100 million for the first time — this year it is projected to hit $107 million.

“I forecast to the athletes in my first player meeting that we would get to $100 million in 2014. To be able to reach that milestone two years ahead of that is testament to the commercial success of women’s tennis,” says Stacey Allaster, who has been chief executive of the WTA since 2009.

When Serena Williams, the modern queen of the WTA Tour, won the U.S. Open last September her $2 million prize haul matched the entire career earnings of Billie Jean King — one of the pioneering nine and a dedicated fighter in the cause of women’s equality.
